BOOK REVIEW: The Crown by Kiera Cass + PLAYLIST

I don't really want to write this post. Don't be alarmed: it'll just make the fact that The Selection series (sans a colouring book) is officially over. OVER.
No more Maxon or America or Eadlyn...or Ahren </3

In the early hours of this morning, I finally finished this novel. I admit, I got swept up in a TV series and kinda dedicated all of my free time to that, rather than this novel (which was a bad idea).

Here's the official details and then I'll give a rundown of my thoughts:

26074181When Eadlyn became the first princess of Illéa to hold her own Selection, she didn’t think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.

Eadlyn still isn’t sure she’ll find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you…and soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible—and more important—than she ever imagined.

GENRE: Romance, YA (Young Adult), Sci-Fi/Dystopia/Futuristic, Fantasy, Fiction
AUTHOR: Kiera Cass
SOURCE: Bought, paperback

RELEASE DATE: May 3rd 2016

Alrighty. I remember when I first bought this from Waterstone's, long overdue from when I originally anticipated (grrrr, exams).
I remember thinking three thoughts:
  1. Pretty cover
  2. ..Isn't it a bit short? (In terms of the amount of pages)
This novel took place straight after the events of The Heir (sniff). I'm gonna blatantly admit: Except for Kile and Henri, respectively, all the other guys seemed bleh and I had to work hard to remind myself who they were in terms of their personality. SPOILER ALERT: Luckily for me, those two were the male version of The Elite/final two

I was pleased with the novel, as a whole.

I kinda hoped that Eadlyn would've confided in her parents a bit more (I mean, who wouldn't? Especially if they are Maxon and America! Maybe I'm the most ancient 18 year old on the planet lol).
Another slight criticism is that the last couple of chapters felt very rushed, and the wedding was not described.
ALSO I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT EADLYN'S AND _____'S 'THING' WAS!!! This is an open letter to Ms Kiera Cass ^^

I really enjoyed being swept up in this world, and hope to come back whenever I can.

It's also amazing at how different sides of history (or, the novels before this with America and Maxon) are told.

Cass did an utterly amazing job on this novel. Scratch that, with all the Selection novels! Moment of silence. Also, props to her for the amazing acknowledgements :p

The writing style was amazing; I felt everything Eadlyn felt and flippin' loved it! The novel was written in first person, Eadlyn's POV.

I honestly loved this novel. I feel like this review is more of me fangirling than anything else. XD

I enjoyed sooo many elements: Maxon being a dad, Osten crushing and Lady Brice, to name a few.
Lady Marlee was kinda bleak though, I have to admit.

I really, really heart Illea, man.

I can't say anything more about this novel; I cannot put it into words. It was so good. Just go check it out already!

If you click this link (<< That one right there) you'll be directed to a TwitLonger page. Now, this will give you a SPOILERed (?) reviewish-fangirl-freakout-thingimebob by me.
Please note that it contains HUGE SPOILERS!

I hope this review did the book some justice lol.

Now onto my playlist!!

Alrighty, so music is in my life now larger than ever, so here's an amalgamation of tracks for parts of the story. Enjoy!

The ending of The Heir & the beginning of this one: Numb, Linkin Park, Fix You/The Scientist by Coldplay

Being with Kile: Mary's Song/Everything Has Changed/Treacherous by Taylor Swift

Marid's vibes: Thnks Fr Th Mmrs by Fall Out Boy, Bad Blood by Taylor Swift

REAL TALK: Did Books Give Me Romance?

Today's post is a real talk one, wherein I stray away from books momentarily (i.e. the next post will be books, books, books).
I'm on a roll this Saturday, check out my other, more light and fun post from today

Please note this hasn't been revised/read by another person, so..yeah

As I sit here with a nearly empty box of Ben & Jerry's, I shall answer a question that has been mildly on my mind for quite some time
Did books give me romance?
Now, this may be puzzling and slightly disturbing. What I mean for it to be is 'Has me reading slightly saucy books given me the substitute for romance that so many close minded (i.e. non-readers) crave?' Sorry for the bad English in that question, I'm British lel

So! My older sister (who luckily does not know the name of this blog,, or else I'll be minced meat fed to our goldfish-jk. That was a joke. And my goldfish is dying so) got into an almost Catfish situation at the end of last year and beginning of this year. Like, she met him once but he lived an hour or two away and they made it work? Long story short, when his brother went to jail, he blamed her and revealed his true colours, blah, blah, bleh.

The same but worse sitch is going on with one of my closest friends (what can I say, I attract the ones hungry for love. Jk..or am I?)
Alrighty, so my friend's situation is a Catfish special waiting to happen. Ish.
She's a good kid- gets decent grades and is cool to talk to. Now, due to the ferocity of stereotypes in society and high school, she is branded a nerd (all she does is tie her hair back and wear glasses. So she's a bit on the chubby side too, so what?) Point being, no guys from school have showed an interest in her. Harsh, but true, unfortunately. I'm a nerd at heart, but kinda put more effort in for myself but enough that I'm not branded a nerd. Ya girl hung out with populars and geeks. I'm Switzerland.
Anyways, she asked me to apologise on her regard to her cyber bf (who lives in America and they've never met) and he may or may not have flirted with me and she thought he fell for me and vice versa and it got ugly. But now, it's all good. (They fought because- don't hate her- but she's religious and he's atheist and he's bi and she's...not).

Straying away from my slightly disturbing anecdotes, I'll make my point: I read normal novels and sometimes pretty romantic novels. I'm not saying full on erotica (not that there's anything wrong with that).
I've been reading novels for a fair chunk of my life (I'm eighteen years young). I started reading slightly maturer books when I was roughly going through puberty.
Was that the right time?

It's no secret that when you're growing up, you're moody and crave attention and attraction.
So was reading the detailed work of authors keeping me afloat and away from getting myself tangled in cyber relationships?

I'm amazed if you're still reading this far down. The point I'm trying to stress is difficult.
I guess I'm saying this:
I've read some amazing book series; Hush, Hush, Pushing The Limits, Fallen, The Selection, Lux and Perfect Chemistry, the Addicted/Calloway Sisters series to name a few, all of which secondarily focus on romance. But I'm trying to say, these have given me the romance I'd have otherwise thought I'd needed by human affection. Just reading alone.
Not just romance, have books substituted, but also adventures. They've opened up great doors in my mind, encouraging me to write.

I hope my point has been made and that I haven't offended anyone whilst trying to put it into words.

To conclude, could this be something valid? Am I overthinking this? Does reading substitute romance to a degree for YOU?

Please weigh in to make me believe I'm not mad.

This post will self-destruct in a week's time.

My Long Term BEAUTY Favourites!

Hello there!

I am so incredibly sorry that it has been so long! (But trust me, there's definitely a lot of embarrassingly depressing drafts).
Today, I wish you a happy Saturday. I, however, am not having a good Saturday- on today's
checklist of bad sh*t, we got..
period pains 😑😒 TMI, maybe. IDC, definitely :p
To counter this, obvi I did the following lol
Ice cream (Oreo and Cookie Dough and anything Häagen-Dazs)
Marvel movie marathon (NO FAVES. ALL ARE BRILL)
Books (currently reading The Crown by Kiera Cass) REVIEW UP I finish it!
BLOGGING of course!
Listening to Taylor Swift’s Red album (Holy Ground is on repeat)
Now back to the topic at hand...My favourite cosmetics!

Okay, so although I don't mention it alot on my blog (because makeup has no relevance to cosmetics).
Let's get into it!

So these products are not in order of importance and superiority- just which my brain remembers 😁
Also, I'm too lazy to include pictures because on Blogger you have to save them and then attach them #effort This one's on you, Google smh. Dw, I'll include links
  1. Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer- Maybelline Ever heard the term 'Holy Grail'? Yep, this is it. Whether it's because you're up late studying, working or partying, this is for you. (Especially for people who aren't morning people..basically everyone. I enjoy using this as a highlighter (bridge of nose, middle of forehead and cupid's bow), as well as using it as an eyeshadow primer (set it with powder for greatness) and obviously, under the eyes.
  2. Great Lash Waterproof Mascara- Maybelline In Seventeen Magazine last year, I saw that they have a bubblegum pink colour of this, which sounds cool. Although I stuck with black because it was only in black at Superdrug (grrr y'all), I will look out for my pink and, until then, I will forever dream. This product is relatively new in my beauty case but it is a keeper. Love it and its brush.
  3. Make Me Blush Cream Blush- Barry M By, George, this is fantabulous! 'Nuff said. Jokes, I'll elaborate. This is my first (and last! Saying bye to all other blushes except this one!) cream blush and it's so nice and natural and not powdery!
  4. Nirvana- Urban Decay This was pricey (#birthdaymoney) but cool. The colours were picked by me so obvi I loved them and they stayed on for fiveever. This palette has turned into a daily product and who knows? I will probably definitely buy another, maybe mixing up the shades.
  5. Infallible Fixing Mist Setting Spray- L'Oreal ParisI cannot live without this fu*cking amazing spray. It saves lives, y'all. And is purrfect for my eight hour shifts at work. It's great especially for if you have oily skin. (And it smells great!)

Here's hoping you enjoyed this post :D
I will be back next time with a book review of The Crown by Kiera Cass- see if you can beat me to the last page?

Stay awesome

BOOK REVIEW: Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles

It is with a heavy heart that I must say this: This is the last book in this (EFFING AWESOME) series, and thus my last review for a novel in this series. But alas! There is hope (note: please don't dwell on this, as 'hopefully' is mentioned here. Operative word, amigos).

Check out my review of Book #2 here

Happy Friday, chums! I just survived a no-break 8 hour shift at work (is that even legal?) And as a 17 year old with the urge to gtfo, I accredit myself for that. Anyhoozle, to celebrate, it's time to pull out the champagne (is that even legal?) and the booooks.
**Update: I fell asleep on my laptop. So I've resumed it on Saturday morning =) I had planned to review it with GIFs but things change :(
Let's delve in!

Goodreads summary:
Luis Fuentes is a good boy who doesn't live with the angst that his big brothers, Alex and Carlos, have always lived with. Luis is smart, funny, and has big dreams of becoming an astronaut. But when he falls for the wrong girl,

Luis enters a dark world he's never known, and just when he thinks he's got life all figured out, learns some disturbing news about his family that destroys his positive outlook on life. Will that Fuentes bad boy streak come out with a vengeance and lure Luis to live on the edge like his new girlfriend and his own father?

Continuing all the steamy romance of the first two books, NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Simone Elkeles gives fans one more satisfying taste of the irresistible Fuentes boys.

GENRE: Romance, Coming of Age/Young Adult- Definitely a novel for slightly maturer readers, Contemporary
AUTHOR: Simone Elkeles
SOURCE: Bought, ebook
RELEASE DATE: August 16th 2011

This words.
Ok, I'm ready. So this novel was bomb.
It started out a bit iffy cause Luis and Nikki were 15 years old and I thought there was gonna be (SPOILER ALERT: more) underage sex..which I'm not particularly comfortable with. But, as if Simone Elkeles heard me almost doubting her, she kicked arse.
So Luis and Nikki met first at...a (SPOILER ALERT: Brittany and Alex's) wedding. First, I'd like to say again how much I love the Fuentes fam (mama included, obvi) and how they have each others' backs. Even if that means Luis stopping the wedding for a mo...

Now Luis, I had slight trouble picturing as a bad boy true to the Fuentes legendary personality trait because he was so young in the first two novels. If that's a sh*tty reason, sorry. Long story short, if you have those doubts, don't. Not even for a second. See, Luis isn't bad like Carlos or Alex- he's bad like Luis. This guy is beyond smart (with hopes of becoming an astronaut) but also has a daredevil streak. And that's epic. Granted, it does become his undoing, though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nikolasa/''Nikki'' is a Mexican by heritage but American for all intents and purposes/bit like me (but in different contexts. I'm British and for some reason, disregard my heritage except for occasionally. Not when Granny is in town, that's for sure lol).  So she doesn't speak Mexican and likes to be called a Western nickname. Her reasoning for dissociating with her heritage is far better than mine...her dad (who is the doctor who performed surgery on Alex- Simone is too clever!!) had a rough childhood in Mexico and doesn't want his kids to go through that.
She was downright epic. She was so blunt it was painful. P.S. She kicked Luis in the crotch. At his own brother's wedding. On the dance floor. Goals!

Before we move any further, I'd like to say that Simone Elkeles did an amazing job on these characters. I mean, very few authors can depict the type of characters that Nikki and Luis are. I mean, Luis is bad boy and good boy.

Now aside from character development (e.g. overcoming fears, keeping their eyes on the prize and figuring out that love overcomes everything- I'm still trying to figure out the last one but this novel series has kinda helped) and kickass writing and storylines, I really, really, really, really enjoyed the much anticipated
Panty Discus!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, if you've read the previous two novels and have zero ideas what I'm talking about, I'm tempted to do this:

If you haven't read the novels, then you're pardoned.

Basically, the Fuentes brothers played this game whenever their mum went to work- they'd cut her pantyhose (or 'tights' if you're British) and put rocks in and fling 'em across the yard. Sound awesome? Okay, get this: All the couples (Alex and Brittany, Carlos and Kiara and Luis and Nikki) play against each other. While I'm not going to spoil the outcome (even though every bone is itching me to do so), I'm just gonna say that it was arguably the best scene in the entire series and was so fun that I wanted to become fictional and part of their world. Then I got sad. *sigh*

HOWEVER, with every actionthere is an equal and opposite reaction. Okay, that quote doesn't really fit here but...I felt like the Pantyhose scene came a bit fast ? Like Nikki and Luis were trying to figure out what's what and their status and stuff. But it worked. But I had to voice that opinion.

Another con during the one way ticket to paradise that was reading this novel was that the drug/gang storyline was kind of a tertiary storyline...with the love/romance taking up the first and second slots. The drug/gang climax seemed fuzzy at times but eventually gained prominency.

I just loved this novel so much that I don't want this review to end!! And whilst I'm 75% through re-reading the second novel, I'm definitely going to re-read Chain Reaction ∞ times!

Just read it. You won't regret it.

In my previous reviews (check 'em here and here), you may have noticed that I meticulously handtype the quotes that I've virtually highlighted and that they are all in chronological order. Unfortunately, due to my animal-like speed reading of this novel lol, I didn't highlight any novels. Not because there were no amazing ones- if I could include the whole damn book, I would. Basically, I'm just saying that I am going to take the quotes from Goodreads :)
  • “Nobody really knows her
    Except the chosen few
    Her secrets are kept hidden
    Behind that sun-kissed hue.
If I reach out to touch her
    She’ll just run away
    My Forever and Always
Will have to wait another day.”
Oh, yeah, did I mention Luis writes poetry about Nikki?
  • “- I don't want you to love me.
    - Too late, mi chava.”
  • “Alex and Carlos—the tag team from hell. They’re the last people I need shit from right now. If they decide to trail me, too, I’ll have an entire entourage.
  • "Because it's stupid, Nik. There's not even room in my day to think about someone else.”
  • “Nothin'," Alex says. "We'll talk later, chica. It's not a big deal."
"Don't chica me, Alex," his bride snaps.
"I think she's gonna deck him," Ben murmurs, amused.”
  • “He has no clue that I have the patience of a saint. At least that's what Carlos says, although that isn't saying much, considering his fuse is about as short as an eyelash.”
  • “There’s always time for arguin’ when you’re a Fuentes.”  AMEN
  • “Sometimes things are better off forgotten.”
  • “I won't have sex with you," she blurts out.
He words slam into my libido like a bucket of water on a flame full of testosterone. I think my dick just twitched in protest.”
  • IMAGE NOT MINE. Credit where
    it's needed

  • “Ben walks in the room and asks, “What were you guys doing?” Nikki says “Nothing” at the same time I say, “Your sister and I were just makin’ out.”

  • “Sometimes I think Ben is right, that the fantasy world is better because reality sucks...but then I look at Nikki and I believe that we can beat the odds.”
  • “Yeah, it does. You once told me that I make you believe in the impossible. You make me believe in love, which I'd given up on. Thank you for proving to me it's not just a fairy tale.''
  • “His high school girlfriend. I caught them in the act.” “You caught them having sex at Homestyle Buffet?” Carlos chimes in, confused and maybe a little amused.”

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 50 stars!!
Long story short...
Would I read it again?
Without a doubt
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely- anyone who can read, this one's for you! (That means EVERYONE should read it)
Would I be caught wandering (and being saved by the book guy) in this world in my dreams?

BOOK REVIEW: Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

Hiiii!! Okay so first it would do ya justice if you read ny review of book #1 in this series (It would also do ya justice if you just read this series!! Then you'll find out why I've been losing sleep)
Needless to say, I am going to have the pleasure in reviewing Rules of Attraction by my new Twitter  bestie, Simone Elkeles.
Let's get started !!

7137775Carlos Fuentes doesn't want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him in Boulder, Colorado. He wants to keep living on the edge, and carve his own path-just like Alex did. Unfortunately, his ties to a Mexican gang aren't easy to break, and he soon finds himself being set up by a drug lord.

When Alex arranges for Carlos to live with his former professor and his family to keep him from being sent to jail, Carlos feels completely out of place. He's even more thrown by his strong feelings for the professor's daughter, Kiara, who is nothing like the girls he's usually drawn to. But Carlos and Kiara soon discover that in matters of the heart, the rules of attraction overpower the social differences that conspire to keep them apart.

As the danger grows for Carlos, he's shocked to discover that it's this seemingly All-American family who can save him. But is he willing to endanger their safety for a chance at the kind of life he's never even dreamed possible?

GENRE: Romance, Coming of Age/Young Adult- Definitely a novel for slightly maturer readers, Contemporary
AUTHOR: Simone Elkeles
SOURCE: Bought, ebook

RELEASE DATE: April 13th 2010
*Even though this is a Young Adult book, I'd recommend slightly mature readers to read it due to the premise (involving drugs and gangs), profanity and scenes of sexual nature :)

I'm going to start with a quick summary of this (heavensent) novel.
Sooo we've got the ever so hot, Carlos Fuentes, who is the younger (but oh so much badder) brother of my first book bf, Alex (PSA: He is the protagonist in the first novel, Perfect Chemistry). He has been living in Meheco (does being like 1/12th Mexican give me the right to say it like that? Lol!) for the past two years (following the events of the first novel), but now it's time for this Fuentes to come back to the Americas to focus on schoolwork, etc and live with his bro, Alex! (And his gf Brittany!) I thought 'Yay, a heartfelt reunion between these dudes'- I mean, they were quite close in the first novel. Boy, was I wrong... So Carlos has changed- he's become a man and hasn't seen Alex in a couple of years and basically doesn't GAF (we've all been there). Buuut he does start school and this is where my new fave love story begins. Next up, we've got Kiara (I'd like to point out that I was reading it as 'Keira' for a quarter of the novel, then my older sister snuck up on me on starting one of her chapters and said 'Who's Kyra?' And I had an 'Oh, dang' moment. Not important). Kiara is me in a nutshell (or what I would be if I could ditch my phone for the outdoors. One day, I'll find the strength). She's athletic, doesn't give two sh#ts about her appearance and is downright sassy. After being those things (and I stress the 'after' because Simone Elkeles makes the effort of characterizing the character THEN revealing what's up, which ensures it does not define the character in terms of their impairment) Kiara has a slight verbal impairment- she stutters. And that makes her crazy self conscious but she helped herself get over that, to which it only comes back when she is nervous. Guess who makes her nervous? Go on, guess. Okay so let me clarify, at first she owns it (being sassy and outwitting him) but then when she falls for him she...stumbles.
I'm gonna stop my summary there because it's more like the review and...most of it will be in orange :/

Okay so, this novel, and I speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth when I write this, was amazing. I love Carlos, I love Kiara, I loved every character.
But aside from my crushes on the characters, I also enjoyed their development.
Ee gee, Carlos went from this stone cold (and not just his abs) dude not giving a care in this world to someone who cared about a girl he once classed according to stereotypes (to be fair, she did, too) to someone joining the military.
And Kaira went from being afraid- hmm, not afraid..I'd say just not speaking up for the world to hear her, to someone who did exactly that.
However, with every great masterpiece, there is a little bit of discolored paint...I would've liked to know, in detail, how Kiara got through her stuttering and what she did after school or college.
Other than that, it was gold.

This novel was written, in true Elkeles style, in alternating POV between Carlos and Kaira. And I flippin' loved the events and storyline. The progression of their love and morals was downright fantastic and I really enjoyed that.
Then there's the fact that my OTP, Alex and Brit, were heavily involved; ahhh....
Yeah, I really fangirl when characters form other novels come in other novels.

The living situation- of a professor (Kiara's dad who knows Alex) taking in an eighteen year old thug..I mean, I know sure as hell that my mum wouldn't allow that. But I easily overlooked this.
And there were parts were I was slightly lost with the progression of the drug dealing part, aka the climax.
But all in all, it was a stellar read

My favourite quotes

**If I could include the whole book here, I would.
  • "Don't make my shitty life worse than it already is."
  • "...and just the thought of being alone right now where I don't have to put on a fake smile sounds like heaven to me".
  • 'Carlos's door is open a crack. Tuck peers inside. ''I don't see.'' Tuck says. ''That;s 'cause I was takin' a piss,'' Carlos says from behind me.
  • I've never met any girl who cares less about her appearance. ''Where you goin' all dressed up?'' I joke.
  • I moan and throw my head back. ''Perpetuatin'? Perpetuatin'? Hell, Alex, our people don't even know the meanin' of that word.''
  • ''You better be careful, Kiara,'' I call out to her. ''Your personality is startin' to show.''
  • Time to change tactics. ''Want to make out?'' ''With who?'' she asks, not bothering to look up.
  • ''Can we do a rematch?'' Carlos asks. ''Like two out of three. Or three out of five?'' ''No way, Jose,'' ''My name's Carlos, not Jose,'' Carlos says, but Brandon isn't listening.
  • As much as I rebel, I'd do anything to make her smile again.
  • It's something a boyfriend would do to a girlfriend that he's crazy about and...and...and Carlos is full of complete bullshit. I know it. He knows it.
  • ''Fine. Homecoming. But you have to wear a dress...and heels. And I'm not talkin' those thick granny ones.''
  • '...I need to protect my heart from being broken.'
  • ''He's a looker.'' ''I know. The problem is, he knows it, too.''
  • ''I appreciate you being here.'' ''And I appreciate you wearin' that dress.''
  • And I feel like complete crap.
  • How am I going to face him in the morning? Worse, how am I going to face myself?
  • ...'I'm tempted to put something red inside the laundry so your underwear turns pink''...I shrug. ''That's okay. I don't wear underwear,'' I lie.
  • I bet I look the same as I feel: like complete shit.
  • ''I thought you didn't want to get involved.'' ''I don't. I want to numb the pain, and figure that seein' you naked right about now might help.''
  • ''Can you walk?'' ''Yeah, but please don't make me prove it right now. Maybe later. Maybe tomorrow.''
  • He's doing a great job of  trying to hide his pain, and I don't think anyone else notices, But I do.
  • The guy doesn't look like he has a care in the world, and right about now I'm jealous.
  • ''You'd be surprised how far away half dead is from fully dead, Alex. Actually, I feel like shit, but am doin' a helluva good job fakin' it.''
  • ''I'm mad at you.'' ....''Take a number and get in line, kid.''
  • ''I live in a permanent rebellious stage.''
  • ''You want to keep our relationship a secret from my parents. I don't. I want to scream to the world that we're together.''
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 5 stars!!
Long story short...
Would I read it again?
Is the sky blue?
Would I recommend it?
Definitely :)
Also, if you enjoyed Katie McGarry's novel, then you'll love this
Would I be caught wandering (and being saved by the book guy) in this world in my dreams?
Don't even ask.

Is Kiara and Carlos your OTP? Or are you more of a Barbie and roughed up Ken person, AKA Alex and Brittany?
Do you also want to give Mama Fuentes a huge hug for her great job of bringing up these hawt guys?
Do you look forward to the next novel? Have you already read it? What do you think?
