My Favourite Books- 2014! πŸ“–

Happy New Years Eve, everybody!! I hope you enjoy today and tomorrow and 2015! What are your New Years Resolutions?
So today I'm gonna be telling you guys my top ten fave books that I read in 2014!!
*Please note that they are listed in no particular order and they may not have come out in 2014.
Also, it was very hard to just pick 10.
Let's begin!
  1. Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick This book was truly remarkable. It was full of mystery, thrill and, in true Becca Fitzpatrick style, hot bad boys ;)
  2. Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout This was the perfect way to end the Lux series and I <3 me some Daemon
  3. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Yes, I did read this before I watched the film for the purpose of watching the film, but it was impeccably written. (Spoiler Alert) R.I.P. Gus -_-
  4. Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins So, I have yet to read Sweet Reckoning (I got it for xmas!) And I enjoyed this novel.
  5. Before You by Amber Hart I recently (a week, to be exact) stumbled upon this series and LORD ALMIGHTY I love it soo much!!
  6. After Us by Amber Hart This is the sequel to the novel above and it. Was. Amazing.
  7. Crash Into You by Katie McGarry One word: Isaiah. Picture this: Isaiah rubbing Rachel's (his GF) head because she's got a migraine.
  8. Red at Night by Katie McGarry This was a sweet, short, FREE read and I loved the journey of Stella and Jonah. 'Twas fun.
  9. The Fall by Rachel Higginson Ivy's journey through breaking free from the sex-slave industry and Ryder opening her cage= ♡♡
  10. Heir of Skies by Rachel Higginson I loved the female protagonist, Stella. She was one of those pretty yet athletic ones- the rare kind. Oohh and that love triangle πŸ”ΌπŸ’œ
Right, so that was my list- what's yours?- and yes, I have many more.

Dear Reader,
Thank you so much for reading this post and I hope you enjoy 2015. Remember: happiness can't be bought. I'm truly thankful for readers of this blog and authors for creating worlds that I get lost I guess happiness can be bought. 😢 LOL. You get what I'm saying.
See you in 2015!

RELEASE DAY BLITZ: After Us by Amber Hart || Review, Giveaway & Excerpt!!

Hello lovelies!! This is going to be my last post in 2014 and I can honestly say this is the best way to end the year on 'Winter Reads'.
Today I am going to be reviewing 'After Us' by Amber Hart. If you don't already know, I adore her and her writing to a whole other level. It's borderline sociopathic(?) how much I am smitten to her books.
This is the sequel to 'Before You' and is the second in the series. Check out my review for 'Before You' here! (Amber Hart loved it!!)
I advise you NOT to read this book if you haven't read the first one. Unlike other- usually standalone- novels that include the main characters as secondary in the sequel and the secondary characters as primary (someone help me out there a name for novels like these?),  this is not at all like that. There's a huge, evil twist at the end of Before You that unravelled to not be that and the events from Book 1 play a large role in this one. So heed my warning!
IDK if that made sense so the bottom line is to not think of this as a standalone! Sorry for any confusion or weirdness with this red message- I am confusing and weird. LOL.

Let's begin!
Goodreads summary:
Sometimes secrets kill. Maybe slowly, maybe painfully. Maybe all at once.

Melissa smiles. She flirts. She jokes. But she never shows her scars. Eight months after tragedy ripped her from her closest friend, Melissa is broken. Plagued by grief, rage, and the painful memory of a single forbidden kiss.

Javier has scars of his own. Life in the States was supposed to be a new beginning, but a boy obsessed by vengeance has no time for the American dream. To honor his familia, Javier joins the gang who set up his cousin, Diego. The entrance price is blood. Death is the only escape.

Two broken souls could make each other whole again—or be shattered forever.

Our time will come. And we'll be ready.

I recieved this ARC in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.

Connect with Amber Hart

Firstly, kudos to Ms Hart for it seems that both of the books from this series have been released in one year! Woah! #superauthor
Unsurprisingly, this book was phenomenal
Like with my Before You review, I'm going to share the dedication because it is beautiful!
To the girls who wear their scars
proudly, quietly or loudly

Okay, okay, let's begin with the review.
Honestly, from reading about Melissa was Faith's POV in Before You, I didn't think she had much more to offer. Don't get me wrong- she was/is- the best BFF in a book ever. Hell, maybe even in real life, too. However, clearly I'm not a good judge of character because Melissa's story was spectacular and I like her ×100000 more.

The novel is in dual POV- Javier's and Melissa's and is written beautifully. The cover is TDF- it's so mysterious and compelling. LOVE IT.
The novel was full of twists and turns and darkness and light and love and hate and it was everything.
I also loved that we didn't immediately find out what was the cause of Melissa's scars until almost the middle- Hart didn't just jump in it.
Speaking of not jumping in, I loved the slow yet real progression of love between Melissa and Javier.
It's one of the best books involving inter-racial relationships and involving real situations. The cultural and racial differences come off in such a professional yet natural manner.

So the plot is that, as we slightly guessed from Before You, there was a tiny spark forming between Javier (Diego's cousin) and Melissa (Faith's best friend). Granted, it was a bit cliche for them to fall for each other, but the last chapter-with them altogether- is so fun! For those oblivious, Melissa kissed Javier at the beach when they were helping Diego and Faith rekindle their momentarily blown out spark. That kiss plays a huggeee role in this book so bear that in mind.

Javier is facing his difficulties, what with moving from Cuba to the USA and...the events from the last book. *Trying with all my might not to spoil anything* He seeks revenge for..the events from Book1 and does so by joining the gang, MS-13.
Melissa, contrary to what I initially believed, has her own demons too. She's got scars that make her insecure but she's still a really strong, independent female protagonist
Ooohhh and for those wondering: Yes, Faith and Diego do come into this novel! I honestly love it when that happens coz it's like a mash up and it's soooo great. Ahhh.

They meet again at the beach- where Melissa works (in the bar of a hotel on the beach) and where Javier is staying for his brother's birthday. Javier initially-although unintentionally, it seems- offends Melissa by inviting her to his room to talk about Faith. Not cool
Rule #101 Guys, never lead a girl on ESPECIALLY when you want info on her BFF.

Long story short, they end up together !!!! but still face obstacles storms (that was a reference to the beach ;)). I really enjoyed this novel as it involved what began as a summer fling, if you will, progressing into something way, way deeper. For all you romantics, there are some very steamy scenes which were bliss! They were fun to read...but also reminded me of how lonely I am -__-

We also got to have a deeper look into their lives i.e. their families.
For example...

*11 kids and I only remember five of them! Ack! I honestly thought I had it. -_-

Although I kind of enjoyed Before You a bit more, I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone with a heart.

Melissa~ Melissa was an amazing female protagonist! She was strong and independent and brave. Her and Javier make a brilliant couple.
Javier~ Javier! I developed a huge crush on him!!
He's hot, protective and quite naΓ―ve in one particular part. But boys will be boys. I loved seeing him with his family (especially his two youngest brothers!) and with Melissa.
SWOON WORTHY MOMENT: When Melissa was angry at Javier and he pretended to fix her car just to spend time with her! (It only needed a battery)
Bonus!!  Javi takes Melissa to a zoo for their first date! A zoo!!
Bonus bonus!! HE CALLS MELISSA MAMI. Not even cool- I melted many times. Like Olaf.
Melissa's family~ So Melissa's mother- a nurse- seems laidback and nice although we only come across her a few times (her sisters are in the novel more frequently than her mum). The oldest is Megan who is bossy, fancy, uptight and not very fond of Javier. We heard of Monica- and came across her- in Before You- she invited Faith and Melissa to the clubs. One thing I wasn't sure of was why Monica and Melissa weren't accounted for for Faith's addiction.
Moving on, then there's sweet, sweet May. I loved her sooo much she was captain of the Jaissa/Melier (comment below telling me your ship name for Javier and Melissa!) and was nice and had a thing for Melissa's boss, Brock!
Brock~ Brock and May were joint captains of the ship. He was sweet and protective and like the big brother Melissa never had.
Javier's family~ This family consists of a whopping thirteen people! There's the mama and papa and three hermanas/hijas (daughters) and eight hermanos/hijos sons). MY SPANISH IS GETTING BETTER!! Ok, so Javier's mother doesn't allow her sons to have any GFs that aren't Latina and Maria, the oldest daughter who is fifteen (And who's novel is next!) sides with her mum. We've got the twins who are fun and funny. And the rest have their own character traits that make up the Reyes familia.
There's a few more characters but read the novel to meet them!

My favourite quotes
I'll try not to go OTT
  • ''It hurts to look at the ocean, glittery and reflecting light, a million liquid jewels on display.''
  • ''Javier slips his sunglasses back on, a cover to shield his soul.''
  • ''Welcome the pain because it's all that I know now.''
  • ''A beacon of light in a sea of dark.''
  • ''But then I realize that we are not permanent. None of us. And life doesn't owe us anything''.
  • ''I'm drinking water because Melissa won't serve me alcohol.'' I don't know why, but I LOL-ed
  • ''I never forgot the water,'' I blurt. I shouldn't have admitted that. Javier grins. ''I know.''
  • ''My demons for yours.''
  • [About the stars} ''Mesmerized by how they shine so brightly despite the darkness around them. I dysfunctionally love the stars. Check out my Twitter bio
  • ''Right now what I want is to get out of this house. And forever end these tears.''
  • ''No one has ever said my name like Javier says my name. It's darkness with a hint of light.''
With great difficulty, I'm gonna stop the quotes (the excerpt's next!). Did you love the quotes? Well those were only in the first 48% of the book!

★ ★ ★ ★ 4 stars

* Prepare to swoon and drown in the ocean of feels.

''What I want is for you to want me like I want you!''
I clamp a hand to my mouth. Regret slaps me in the face. Javier pulls my hand away. His stare takes in all of me. My eyes, My lips. I'm embarrassed by what I said. I'm embarrassed by my ridiculous heart, which thumps loudly, echoing his every touch.
''You want me, mami?''
Yes. In the deepest parts of my bones, yes.
''Answer me.'' His voice is demanding.
''No,'' I say, stubborn.
A grin crawls across his face.
''I owe you an apology,'' he says. ''I couldn't talk to you earlier. Wanted to. But I couldn't. You understand?''
''Not at all.''
Javier's warmth reminds me of the water. Of wanting to jump in. I'd do anything to cool off.
''If I explain it to you, will you remember in the morning?''
''Probably not,'' I answer honestly. ''But then again, you're hard to forget.''

A sexy small town romance from New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Jessie Evans

Lonesome Point, Texas, Book Four

This ride is going to last a lot longer than eight seconds…

Female professional bull rider, Reece Hearst, graduated from the school of hard knocks. With honors. Because life is like bull riding—when it sends you to the dirt, you do whatever it takes to get on your feet, even if you have to crawl. Like when officials stripped her of her rodeo queen title on the basis of vicious gossip years ago and not even her father would believe her side of the story. Reece could have stayed in the dust, wallowing. Instead, she fixed Lonesome Point in her rearview, joined the pro circuit, and never looked back. But now a serious injury threatens to end her career and she’s back in Lonesome Point, living next door to the family that once made her life a living hell.

After multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan and his father’s death, all Grayson Parker wants is to get his family’s cattle business back in the black and live a quiet life. But the return of Reece Hearst opens old wounds, throwing his ordered world into chaos. Grayson was serving overseas when Reece was a teenager and can’t believe the girl he once knew has grown into a heartbreaker as hardened as she is beautiful.

Grayson finds a kindred spirit in wounded Reece and soon longs to be the man to show her that there is life after pain and loss. But can two people as damaged as Reece and Grayson find their way to happily ever after? Or will the scars on their hearts forever keep them apart?

About Jessie Evans
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Jessie Evans, gave up a career as an international woman of mystery to write the sexy, contemporary Southern romances she loves to read.

She's married to the man of her dreams, and together they're raising a few adorable, mischievous children in a cottage in the jungle. She grew up in rural Arkansas, spending summers running wild, being chewed by chiggers, and now appreciates her home in a chigger-free part of the world even more.

When she's not writing, Jessie enjoys playing her dulcimer (badly), sewing the worlds ugliest quilts to give to her friends, going for bike rides with her house full of boys, and drifting in and out on the waves, feeling thankful for sun, surf, and lovely people to share them with.

I recived a review copy of this novel and can I say, it was amazing. It was well written, sexy and a really fun read. I loved it! (I'm not going to do a full review because there's a giveaway and excerpt coming up!)
I award it four stars, by the way.

Grayson smiled. “That went better than I thought it would. At least you didn’t bolt at the first sign of a messy emotion.”

“Whatever, asshole.” Reece pushed out into the center of the hot tub, splashing water into Grayson’s face as she went. “You don’t know me that well. I’m not that predictable. I’ve still got a few surprises up my sleeve.”

He winked. “Don’t I know it. I’m going to go grab that shower. Tell your sister hi for me.”

Reece lounged in the hot tub for another moment, admiring the view as Grayson climbed out of the tub and dried himself with the towel before leaving it on the edge of the hot tub for her and walking inside naked.

Damn. The man was hot as hell in a pair of blue jeans, but nude he was pure perfection. From his wide shoulders to his muscled ass to those long, powerful legs that looked like they could wrap around a bull and hold on for a lot longer than eight seconds, he was too good to be true. His scars only made him hotter, each patch of thin, wrinkled flesh proving that his was a man who faced down danger and went back for more. He was brave, he was kind, he was sexy as sin, and he was obviously into her. It would be a recipe for a hell of a good time if not for all the obstacles standing in their way.

One word: HOTTTTT.

Now on to the Giveaway!!

EXCLUSIVE Q+A with Liars, Inc author, Paula Stokes + EXCERPT!!

Hey guys!! Today I'm going to be participating in a Q+A with the author of the new novel, Liars, Inc, Paula Stokes!
Here's some info about the upcoming book!

It all starts with one little lie…

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell lies to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts a business providing forged permission slips and cover stories for the students of Vista Palisades High. Liars, Inc. they call it. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.

Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? In a story that Kirkus Reviews called "Captivating to the very end," Paula Stokes starts with one single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the explosive final chapters.

Expected release date: March 24th 2015
Let's get started!
1). What was the process of writing this novel like?

I wrote LIARS, INC. back in late 2011 and finished the first draft in early 2012, before THE ART OF LAINEY had even sold to a publisher. I was writing a pen name trilogy for a book development company at the same time, so LIARS was my fun book, the project I turned to after I had completed my contracted work for the week. I did several revisions which were tedious--anytime you make changes to a mystery they often start a ripple effect where you have to make more changes--but overall the book was easy to write and I'm happy with how it turned out. NOTE TO REVIEWERS: I did make over 150 changes/additions after the ARC was printed. Nothing too major, but I think the finished book is tighter in plot, character, and authenticity. If you read the ARC and would like to know what I changed for curiosity or review purposes, email me.

2). Can you relate to any of these characters? Do you have a favourite?

I can relate to Max and Parvati, but only a little bit. Like Max, I grew up in a lower-income family and most of my friends had more money than I did. Like Parvati, I'm ambitious, a bit impulsive, and interested in martial arts and spy stuff. That's where it ends, though. Parvati is absolutely my favorite because I wrote her to have Borderline Personality Disorder, but since you read through Max's eyes and he idealizes her, you don't really see much of her internal struggles. They exist, though, and they inform almost all of her choices. I really want to write a companion book from her POV.

3). Are you on Team Truth or Team Lies?

I have to be on Team Truth, because I'm a terrible liar. Also, look what happens when you lie! *points at book* People get hurt. People get shot. People get arrested. People DIE.

4). Please explain your other books to me (what they're about, what they mean to you, how they came about, etc)

My work-for-hire books (The Secrets of the Eternal Rose Trilogy, writing as Fiona Paul) are creepy murder mysteries set in Renaissance Venice. I wrote them in collaboration with Paper Lantern Lit. THE ART OF LAINEY (2014) is the story of a somewhat clueless popular girl who gets dumped, uses the ancient teachings of Sun Tzu to try to win back her boyfriend, and ends up discovering who she really is in the process. Bonus factors: Epic and supportive best friend, mohawked punk rock boy who likes to bake. I also have 2 books coming out in 2016 and 2 books coming out in 2017 and I'm hoping to add to that number :)

5). Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Stop calling yourself aspiring. If you write, you're a writer. It's that simple :) More advice for writers can be found on my blog under the FAQ tab.

6). Any hidden/secret talents?

I'm a sea lion whisperer. I once snorkeled with them at Los Islotes, Mexico and now if I go to the zoo I can run back and forth in front of their pen and they'll play with me.

7). The cover is breathtaking and intriguing. What do you think it represents and did you have any input?

Like most authors, I don't usually get much input into my covers. Usually the editor, design people, and sales people sit down and come up with a concept they think fits the book and will appeal to the right readers. Only then, after everyone smart and savvy is in agreement, do they usually show the author.

LIARS was different because it's a really hard book to capture in a single image. My editor contacted me and was like "Design was going to put Max's shark's tooth pendant on the front but you can't really tell what it is and we don't think it works--do you have any ideas?" I didn't have anything specific but I fired off as many possibilities as I could think of--a deserted beach, a cabin in the woods, a house on fire, a spiderweb motif, a bloody cell phone, a stack of dollar bills being cut by a knife, a cemetery--knowing none of them were quite right. Luckily, the art director at Harper found the cover image and procured the rights from the original artist/photographer. I LOVE this cover!! It exactly conveys the mood of the story and I see the image as Preston being stolen right out of his shoes. There is also a rainstorm that plays prominently in the book so this image is all-around perfect.

i). Book or film? Film >_>
ii). Summer or winter? Now that I've moved to Portland, summer.
iii). Vampires or werewolves? Vampires.
iv). E-readers or paper/hardbacks? Physical books
v). Pretty lies or the ugly truth? The truth never hurts more than finding out someone you love has lied to you.

I plunge through the shrubbery, branches clawing at my face and arms. I hear McGhee and Gonzalez behind me, crashing through the brush like angry bears. Lengthening my stride, I propel myself forward. I know these woods. I know where I’m going. The river. These guys aren’t superhero TV FBI agents. They won’t go over the cliff.
But I will.
I’ve done it loads of times. Never while being chased, but still, it’s easy. Run. Push off. Fall. Sink. Emerge.
The moon shucks off a veil of clouds, illuminating the widening path in front of me. I can see where the trail dead-ends at a sheer drop-off. Water roars, just out of sight. My tennis shoes crunch gravel as I accelerate. Blood pounds in my ears. Where’s Preston DeWitt? I don’t know. That’s the truth. Not the whole truth, because it’s too late for that. Even if I told the feds everything, they wouldn’t believe me.
My left foot lands at the edge of the cliff. I push off with all my might, rocketing my body out toward the middle of the river, far away from the jagged rocks below. As I plummet through the crisp night air, I think about whether things might have been different if I had just told the truth from the beginning.

Thank you so much, Paula Stokes

Merry Christmas!! πŸŽ…πŸŽ„

I'm gonna start this post by saying Merry Christmas to you reading this right now (Also, thanks for reading! ♡)
Here's a message from yesterday's post:
To you,
I hope you have a beautifully exciting and joyful Christmas and an extraordinarily spectacular New Year. Remember that as long as you have people you love around you, then presents are worthless..but presents are a bonus!

Thank you so much for reading this post- it's a huge gift to know my thoughts are read by another. Even if it's one.

Live, laugh, love life,
Nylah M :D

Less than a week ago, I participated in Catarina ReadingandThings: 12 Days of Christmas- it was a book-revolving event on Facebook for bloggers and authors to come together for fun.
My hour involved a quiz and I got some amazing responses from some amazing girls. Shout out to them.

One question was:..
What's your favourite Christmas book?

Seeing as it's Christmas today, I realize that I am somewhat late with this post. But we're still gonna do it

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
"The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! / Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason." Dr. Seuss's small-hearted Grinch ranks right up there with Scrooge when it comes to the crankiest, scowling holiday grumps of all time. For 53 years, the Grinch has lived in a cave on the side of a mountain, looming above the Whos in Whoville. The noisy holiday preparations and infernal singing of the happy little citizens below annoy him to no end. The Grinch decides this frivolous merriment must stop. His "wonderful, awful" idea is to don a Santa outfit, strap heavy antlers on his poor, quivering dog Max, construct a makeshift sleigh, head down to Whoville, and strip the chafingly cheerful Whos of their Yuletide glee once and for all.

Looking quite out of place and very disturbing in his makeshift Santa get-up, the Grinch slithers down chimneys with empty bags and stealing the Whos' presents, their food, even the logs from their humble Who-fires. He takes the ramshackle sleigh to Mt. Crumpit to dump it and waits to hear the sobs of the Whos when they wake up and discover the trappings of Christmas have disappeared. Imagine the Whos' dismay when they discover the evil-doings of Grinch in his anti-Santa guise. But what is that sound? It's not sobbing, but singing! Children simultaneously adore and fear this triumphant, twisted Seussian testimonial to the undaunted cheerfulness of the Whos, the transcendent nature of joy, and of course, the growth potential of a heart that's two sizes too small. This holiday classic is perfect for reading aloud to your favorite little Whos. (Ages 4 to 8)

This suggestion came from Kacey Ables! Check her out on Facebook
  • Secret Santa by Kathleen Brooks
Secret Santa is USA Today Best-selling Author Kathleen Brooks' novella to thank her readers for their amazing support and to update them on their favorite characters from her Bluegrass books.
If you're new to the Bluegrass Series, please pick upSecret Santa as her gift to you this holiday season. At the end of the book there is an excerpt from Bluegrass State of Mind, the first book in the series, also currently free.
It wouldn't be Christmas in Keeneston without a party! Everyone's invited, even Santa…

Kenna's court docket is full, Dani's hiding from her in-laws, Paige and Annie are about to burst from pregnancy, and Marshall is breaking up fights at the PTA Christmas Concert. The sweet potato casserole is made, the ham and biscuits are on the table, and men are losing their shirts - and not because of bets placed with the Rose Sisters! All the while, the entire town is wondering one thing: who is the Secret Santa that showed up with special gifts for everyone?

This suggestion came from Stephanie Yvette D! Check her out on Facebook

I hope you guys enjoyed this post. What's your favourite xmas book? Have you read any of those above?
Until next time- bye!! ✌
